Such a waste of time that left ITV.com (or ITV.co.uk as it was then) years behind the BBC and Channel 4.

At this time, programmes such as This Morning would say "more details on our website www.itv.co.uk", and then you'd go to itv.co.uk to be faced with a list of links, and the actual This Morning link would be something like www.itv-thismorning.co.uk which would then forward to g-wizz.net/thismorning.

The ITV website was launched in 1994 as 'www.itv.co.uk. The BBC website was launched in 1997. It was and still is 'www.bbc.co.uk' and the Channel 4 website was launched in the late 1990s (definitely before 1999), it was known as 'www.channel4.co.uk' but it was shortly renamed and it currently is now 'www.channel4.com'.

It doesn't really matter what launched first, it's what they did with it. ITV.co.uk was a mess of separate websites until the first attempt to bring them into line with ITV.com.

Channel 4 used to have a really active online community with loads of different message boards.

Oh. I did go on the ITV website in 2004, 2005 and 2006. The channel websites were itv.com/itv2, itv.com/itv3 and itv.com/itv4 to name a few.

It seems that the GMG regions had some really good individual items, but never the ability or willingness to put it all together into a coherent look. It always felt that there was no one responsible for branding.

That's not always true. GMG do have some good branding, just like Carlton does. I like the unused ITV 1999 idents better:

Yea that ident is brilliant. Will never understand why it was never used.

I think probably because of disagreements over what should be used for the 1999 ITV rebrand. So they decided on this:

What's not true? Were you even alive when these were used?

Ooh, now I can make my own continuity announcements circa 2002!

"Now, Matthew Kelly hosts the gameshow where they've Never Had it So Good!"

What do you mean by that do you mean what it resulted to?

Its great that you find these interesting, however, this isn't a new topic to established members on the forum. Its been discussed before.

It doesn't really matter what launched first, it's what they did with it. ITV.co.uk was a mess of separate websites until the first attempt to bring them into line with ITV.com.

I guess the regional structure held it back, though ITV.com did predate ITV Plc by a few years, whilst STV's insistence on reference to their website probably means they get mentioned more on ITV now than they ever have. I wonder how many Scots head to stv.tv first!
Shouldn't that have been posted in the "John Logie Baird has Invented Television" thread?

The regional structure should not even be an excuse, they should have put the regional links on their website.
