> Well in Yorkshire we've never had invision continuity, its not the YTV way, some regions did, some regions didn't, But Redvers Kyle's announcements back in the 70s over static captions are always refered to as being popular at the time

Well, not 100% true, but near enough. YTV basically took on many of Rediffusion's presentation staff in '68 and cloned their look for Yorkshire, which did include in-vision. They got rid of it though in around 1971.

All ITV stations had IVC in the 60's, and indeed all but 2 did as late as 1984, when one by one they all started to hide behind their idents. The sad thing is that I'm 100% sure that each of the small ITV companies had they won in 93 and remained independent would have retained IVC up to the present day.

By the way, Bob Preedy (The YTV Announcer) is doing his thing on BBC Radios Leeds, Sheffield, Humberside and York at the moment.

So if you can pick up any of those stations, tune in and hear him doing his Saturday job!

Alternatively, if you can't receive those, you can here him on this link from 11pm tonight:
BBC Radio Humberside
Only about 10 seconds of talking before a song kicks in though, but he's talking in a different style to what he does on ITV1

> I'm new to this forum and have thoroughly enjoyed reading all the comments, but one question remains unanswered...why cant the CA's be in-vision any more.

Anyway, to answer your question, the main reason there is no IVC on Granada, Border or Tyne Tees is that the continuity departments of the three stations have all been closed down, and their functionality moved to the YTV centre in Leeds. So if you don't like the current style, you now know who is responsible for it (the style that is, not the decision!)

BTW I've just heard Bob on BBC York, and have to say he sounds much, much better on that programme. His voice also sounds much clearer, another by-product of YTV's oddball pre-emphasis on their CA mike I guess.... He's a good radio presenter, must find it more interesting. If that is so, why doesn't he give the YTV job up and take on a higher profile at the BBC?

Although we criticise Yorkshire's continuity standards these days as very poor, but I was looking at a tape from 1992, and in those days, Yorkshire did have decent standards of continuity, they used to have a 'COMING NEXT' with the ITV generic graphics of the time, their trailers used to be excellent too. Also at 5.30 am, Yorkshire used to play out an extended version of the 1989 ITV generic music as well.

I assume, it has occured in other regions too..

The 'advertising on Yorkshire Television has never been easier, Regional ITV1 its the business' advert has started reappearing frequently.

YTV seem to be having trouble selling adverts yesterday, during SM:TV Live was noticeable (probably as nobody buys Kids toys etc in January), the adverts were bumpered with trailers, which doesn't usually occur.

There was a fully regionalised announcement at 7pm just before Emmerdale tonight.

And the announcer was Maggie Mash.

Maybe this is the start of the new 'regional' feel to the Leeds Continuity Centre?

Another historical reason that helped to tip the scales AGAINST in-vision continuity was the TVam strike and the unions.

I remember in the early ATV days at Aston Road North, then Broad Street, there was a sparky sat there the whole time, just to switch the lights on before each announcement and off again afterwards.

Broadcasting staff weren't allowed to throw light switches in those days, you had to be an ETU member to do that.

After the strike and the re-appraisal of what was cost effective, a lot of stations realised that out-of-vision meant an Anglepoise and a forty watt bulb, rather than an ETU member.

Okay, not the MAIN reason for the change, but quite a big contributory factor

I take it that's why it's so difficult to get a lightbulb changed at the Beeb these days, then http://web.ukonline.co.uk/tv.home/forum/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Having ITV regions now on Sky digital, it is brilliant looking into
other regions continuity other than Granada ( my region ).
Peeping at Border, I was surprised that at the start of peak viewing, the screen was full of programmes coming up, starting at 7pm with Emmerdale then listings for the rest of the evening. This was shown with the Border caption at the top with an announcer I've never heard before from GMG. This seems to be unique to Border as Granada don't do one, so I presume YTV and TTTV don't either. It took me back to when regional continuity was done properly. The good old days.Smile

This is indeed unique to Border the announcers on this menu are Border ones from Carlisle (news readers do it I believe) not Leeds ones. Its just one of several little differences Border have from the other GMG North stations which in my opinion makes Border perhaps the most independant of the four Leeds controlled franchises.

For some reason, Bob Preedy seems to be

- announcing on ITV1
and
- doing his Radio Show on BBC North

at the same time tonight!

whats to stop tyne tees doing something similar? - certainly wouldnt cost much, im presuming most of the required equiptment would still be there?, ie, if border have the means to do it, and permission, why hasnt tttv
