In today's Daily Mail it says Lara Logan will be on the sofa when Fiona is on maternity leave. This has annoyed Penny and Kate.

GMTV needs to relaunch IMO. it is cheap, tacky and unprofessinal.

I like Penny best - she is apparantly a genuinely nice person and I like her presenting style she seems so much more human and friendly than the others, for example she spent most of last week commenting that it was nearly February! In short Penny Rocks! And of course she is ex-Thames...

I'm not overly keen on Kate Garraway and Andrew Castle though, they seem a bit wooden although I think that's more due to the fact that they haven't had much experience AFAIK and I'm sure they'll only improve over time.

I don't think they should be putting Lara Logan on the sofa, I just can't picture it working well. Besides she as she has these excellent contacts as she said she should be reporting and not doing a presenters job otherwise the contacts are just going to waste!

I thought that Lara Logan was sharing the News Hour with Penny Smith and Kate Garroway, and presenting with John Stapleton.

AND its formula dates right back to TV-am- 1 hr of news then gossipy lifestyle programming.

<gags>And I think Lorraine had her own programme on TV-am. did she not?</gags>

But then again, it's a formula that people obviously wanted, GMTV tried something different when it first started and it failed miserably. Today, they are the most watched Breakfast show in the country, so they must be doing something right.

Lara was on C5's relaunch of 'The Wright Stuff' two weeks ago and was the most compentant presenter out of the lot.

I'm surprised that she decided to stay with GMTV and not with Sky News, where her journalistic skills would be put to better use.

I wouldn't call you dumb - but I think you must be young. TV:am was basically the pre 1993 version of GMTV. Technically TVam/GMTV were their own channels but they were broadast on ITV. Visit Jim Edwards site at home.clara.net/jim.edwards - he's got some files and theres a link to the TVAM website - I've forgotton the address.

You missed a lot, Wacaday, Roland Rat.

TVAM was a load of rubbish really, just like GMTV

Hi - TV-am was GMTVs predecessor, they ran from the beginning of Breakfast TV on ITV in February 1983 until they lost their franchise in 1991 which led to them stopping broadcasting on the 31st December 1992 and the next day GMTV took over.

TV-am stopped due to the way the franchises were awarded which changed due to the 1990 Broadcasting Act, before 1990 all potential applicants for a franchise had to go down to a meeting with the Independent Broadcasting Authority and explain what they would do and then the IBA would decide out of all of the applicants who got what. However, in 1990 the system changed basically auctioning off the franchises to the highest bidder after they'd passed a 'quality threshold' although at the same time the companies also had to have enough money left over to be able to make a profit and provide a decent level of boradcasting - in short none of the companies knew where the hell they were as regards this auction.

The results of the franchise auction led to Television South West and Television South (TSW and TVS) losing because they bid too much and Thames Television and TV-am losing because they bid too little against their competitors (Carlton and Sunrise Television (later to become GMTV))

Heres an interesting fact about TVS:

On the last Coast to Coast South, at the end, it said Coast to Coast 1981 - 1992

Ok, they started newsgathering etc in 1981, but the programme didn't start until 82.

I think Penny should leave GMTV - and present one of the regional news bulletins the BBC has - preferably the one read by Gordon Burns.
