Interesting it mentions the 7pm bulletin, when Five is desperate to axe it!

this will mean a bigger, better news for our viewers.
Thats nice to hear! I bet the RTS awards have swung it for them.

I doubt a Channel 5 contract would spark of a new building project, more likely that they were allocated the budget for it, and SKYsports didnt get the money this time round.

"News anchor Kirsty Young will continue to present Five's flagship bulletins at 17.30 and 19.00 but from a purpose built, state-of-the-art studio in West London which will be unveiled for the first Five News report in the New Year."

So, err.

Is the 'state-of-the-art studio' just for five news, or is that the new Sky Centre. If its the later, then it will be a quick build if it will be finished by the end of the year, and may mean a new look around that time also.

ITN are soon alledgedly planning to become a direct part of ITV. I wouldnt be surprised if Channel 4 aren't planning some changes to their news.

What if the ITN name were to be completely ditched in favour of "ITV News", but they still provide for Channel 4?

In the same way that Newyddion has a look which is totally BBC-style, with no S4C-style elements, we could see something similar on Channel 4.

Imagine the title sequence endcap of the ITV regional programmes, but with the text above the blue and yellow squares saying "Channel 4 News":

Channel 4 News

I don't think even ITV would be stupid enough to confuse viewers about their brand in this way.

'New studio' doesn't necessarily mean new building though.

What happened to the old RI:SE studio at Sky?

Not at all surprising, the writing has been on the wall ever since 2002 when the Sky News simulcast started, and was cemented when they came to an agreement to simulcast Sky News during major incidents.

Sky News themselves were also trying to make the big push into terrestrial, they failed to win the ITV News contract in 2001 (although imo they were winning the war at that time - ITN had to accept quite signficant budget cuts to keep providing the news on ITV), and with it seemingly increasingly likely that ITN will end up back where it started, as ITV's wholely owned news operation, intrinsically inseparable from it, it's not at all surprising that C5 have looked to change provider - and Sky is the only other viable provider they could use.

Glad to hear their stupid new look (completely unnecessary too when the old look was hardly old) won't last long.

It will be interesting to see if C4 change provider too when their news contract is next up for renewal.

Well, this is probably good news for everyone who doesn't like the new 5 News music...!

I suppose we'll have to wait and see whether the move will be a change for the better or worse. Personally, I really like the current look and feel, so the Sky-produced service will have to do pretty well to top it.

It should be good for five news, I'm sure Sky will try to do better than ITN, and they'll want to put more resources into it given it's their first major terrestrial contract. Interesting that it appears to be a budget cut though (it seems using Sky's existing resources will try to cement over that)

Also, as Larry Scutta said, purpose-built studio is more likely to mean a new set than the new building.

So it's be another new on-screen look for Five News. It's only been 7 years and I've already lost count!!!

I wonder if we'll see a name change - maybe Sky News on Five or something like that.

PS: I hope ITN try to keep Kirsty Young and either give her John Suchets position at ITV News (10.30pm and Sundays) or maybe even a move to C4 to lighten the workload for Krishan Guru Murphy.

I think they're on their 4th look (5th if you count the re-editing of the previous look from 5 news to five news). The original lasted until late 1999 when it was replaced with the white look (the one with the huge clock in the background), presumably to match the new white background presentation they introduced at the end of 1999. This lasted until early 2002 when it was replaced again with a decidedly not white look (presumably to acknowledge the retirement of the white presentation - although it had started to be phased out a good year or so before the idents themselves finally went). This look was subsequently re edited in the autumn of 2002 when the station rebranded. And then this was replaced with the current look at the end of 2003.

I think I've got that right?

I would've thought that would be very unlikely. If anything, Sky News will probably be even less obvious on the channel than it is now - I think it's quite on the cards that the 6AM simulcast will go and be replaced with a dedicated C5 news bulletin (which it did once have btw, the whole simulcasting of a news channel idea (first Euronews, then ITN News Channel, then eventually Sky News) only started because when ITN said they had to withdraw the early programme because they couldn't afford to produce it any more with the funding they had).
