I didn't really get this.

I don't think it would have been made if Ricky Gervais' named hadn't been attached to it. It wasn't funny or clever. I didn't understand what the main character's problem was. Why did he walk/run in an odd way? Was he meant to be showing off to the camera like David Brent?

Was Karl Pilkington acting or just playing himself?

I've enjoyed pretty much everything that Ricky Gervais has been involved in, his Channel 4 chat show, The Office, Extras and Life's too Short to mention a few but Derek just seemed to have no point to it. Was Stephen Merchant involved in this at all?

I saw the trailers for this, and wasn't too impressed. But then I heard Richard Bacon saying how they don't do the show justice.

I thought it was OK, I'd even go as far to say I liked it, but that might just be because I wanted to like it.

It might just be a case of needing to get used to the character, I'd certainly give it another chance.

It does seem like the first thing I've seen Gervais in where he hasn't been playing a version of himself.

Will be interesting to see if it's commissioned.

Its getting a lot of mixed reviews on twitter, It was NEVER billed as laugh out comedy and next big thing from him either.

It was clearly pointed out on the trails by the CA that it was "Comedy Drama" now if some people cant get that then there really is no hope. People need to get of there backside and out the holes and still to release he was never writing a comedy, and trying to do something different. I'm NO Fan of Gervais

Some people seem to have watched it wanting to be offended even though there is actually nothing to be offended about. Ricky Gervais was right when he said the character was little more than a nerd/loner, rather than labelled with a learning disability as some professional complainers had already been offended by.

For what it was it was quite good - and the first time I've seen Ricky Gervais play someone who isn't Ricky Gervais. And even though it didn't make me laugh out loud it did make me think, and therefore probably did what it set out to do.

Even though I'm not sure it could sustain a series I do hope C4 do go ahead and commission one rather than letting Gervais take it to Sky or HBO. C4 need to be making some big moves into original scripted content again and with comedy especially they've had too many pilots in the last couple of years which haven't come to anything.

Worth noting that the "Chickens" episode of Comedy Lab from last year (starring two of the Inbetweeners cast) has been comissione for a full series on Sky1.

I think you're misunderstanding the "mixed reviews". People were not expecting a laugh out loud comedy (apart from anything else, he's NEVER written a conventional comedy like that) - the issue was whether the character offensive on some level.

I think he's always very clear about his work (it wasn't labelled as a person with special needs, etc), and even clearer that he doesn't care if its received badly.

I really enjoyed it. The characters - only lightly touched upon - were very tenderly written and portrayed. I thought the female lead was brilliant, I loved the romance and the laughter.

I think he could pull 6 episodes out of this, but probably not more.

He's never disappointed me yet, in all these years.

Channel 4 has given it a full series.

Happy to see C4 give it a full series - not because it's the only time Ricky Gervais has actually acted as anyone other than Ricky Gervais, but because C4 really need to get back into the genre and though this isn't laugh out loud comedy (it isn't designed to be) it's good that they haven't rejected it and allowed Sky to grab it.

It seems Derek has won award, any one know what it was. Also ricky also gives an interview in today's metro about it.
