A round up of previous John Lewis Christmas ads from The Guardian:

Amazing really they've become what they are in such a short space of time - it's not even six years really, it's two. The 2011 ad is the one that captured the imagination, I don't think the 2007-2010 ads got much public attention at all.

The Beatles cover they used in 2008 was certainly memorable as well as Ellie Golding's cover of Elton John in 2010.

The whole John Lewis thing has completely passed me by in recent years as there's barely been anything on commercial television I've watched, anything I have has been on Catch Up - especially given that the ads tend to premiere during The X Factor, something I last regularly watched around the time Jedward were in it. They've been very clever, though, building up what's basically becoming an 'institution' in only two or three years and getting their wispy-voiced cover versions to #1 with ease. Sometimes, in order to be really big, you have to aim straight down the middle of the road.
Just thinking about the Coca Cola trucks, ask anyone and you'd think they've played that advert every single year for about two decades, but am I right in thinking that the one brought out every year was only first aired as recently as 1997? I don't think it was on at all from about 1999 to five or so years ago when it got brought back, certainly around the early-mid noughties they were doing different campaigns.

The version with the Grandad reading his grandson a story must have been late 90s or very early 00s? I think after that one they stopped and didn't repeat until the chopped edit started in either 2007 or 8 (as a result of a C4 vote istr)?

I'd like to know whats happened to the advertising department at Matalan.
We had this brilliant ad 2 years ago from them:
and last years wasn't too bad either,
but now we are given this:
Seriously? I know some people moan about Christmas ads, but its nice when companies at least try and make their ads special, but Matalan clearly haven't even tried this year!
