In the USA doesn't Cartoon network have Adult swim for its 10pm slot.

Kids channels were going on well into the evening well before than anyway- even on time-share analogue Cartoon Network & Nickelodeon were on well into the evening.

The Nickelodeon channels still aren't 24 hours for some reason unlike Cartoon Network & Disney, though they're now only off from midnight until 3AM, the downtime was 22:00-6:00 until not that long ago- which is still later then the 21:00 CBBC will be closing down from next year. So CBBC aren't doing anything shocking- they'll still be broadcasting fewer hours than the commercial channels were a decade ago!

Disney Channel isn't 24hrs. Only Disney XD is true 24hrs. Channel and Junior just show a holding slide.

Disney Channel and Junior close at midnight (and I notice Junior still claims to be a "new" channel on its EPG entry after midnight despite being launched as far back as 2011 replacing Playhouse Disney) and get going again at 6am.

Nickelodeon probably doesn't feel it worthwhile to show things after midnight, and a lot of stuff they show in the 2 hours from 3am is their homemade stuff like Renford Rejects and the odd back catalogue entry. We never did get a true Nick@Nite block or chanel, though it was tooted for forever and a day, and eventually materialised as the Paramount Channel.

Well, the older Hannah-Barbera cartoons all moved to Boomerang when that launched. In fact Boomerang continued to show older cartoons 'as new' for years (promoting them as if they were brand new shows, that's what it seemed to me at least) - such as Tiny Toons, Animaniacs and Garfield & Friends. It's only in the last few years that it's ditched that mostly.

Around 2000, Cartoon Network had its own late night strand 'AKA Cartoon Network' - I didn't have cable at the time so I don't have any recollection of it sadly, but there are actually quite a few clips of it on YouTube.

It was launched for the purpose of showing the older cartoons from the archive. Since then they've added more recent programming, usually the cutoffs that Cartoon Network doesn't want, while still showing stuff like Scooby Doo, Tom & Jerry and Loony Toons.

It wasn't really late night, it was 7-9PM, and it was in 1999 not 2000.

I think proper adult stuff you wouldn't get on kids channels, as IIRC the regulations are that kids channels can't show post-watershed content, even after the watershed. That's why when Adult Swim's popped up in this country it's been on other channels like Bravo and FX. I know they showed Space Ghost Coast-to-Coast at one time, though I think it's the only adult swim show that's actually been on Cartoon Network.

One of the staples of AKA was "Cult Toons". Pretty difficult to describe but they were humorous remixes of Hanna-Barbera cartoons and movies from the 70s and 80s, with the odd snippet of an indie band or something. There might still be some residue of them on YouTube. They were something of a precursor to the fad commonly known as YouTube Poop, but that's another topic for another forum... But besides the point, Cult Toons was something that probably wouldn't amuse children like an episode of Tom and Jerry would.

Although when it comes to adult content on TV in the US, it's bizarre- I've seen them showing South Park and Family Guy uncut (apart from bleeped swearing) during the day, yet (unless you're a premium channel like HBO or AMC) you can't say the F word, even late at night.

So they can show things during the daytime our TV would never be able to get away with, but if one of the main networks tried showing Shameless, even at the dead of night, the FCC would have a fit!

Cult Toons amused me at the time! Though I would have been 12/13 at the time it was running, though I guess younger kids wouldn't have got it. But then I doubt they'd have got Johnny Bravo either.

I have been pleasantly surprised by how much some of the shows, especially Cow and Chicken and Johnny Bravo, appeal to my twentysomething sense of humour. I have to credit anybody who can make "children's" television with a hint of adult-ish comedy and get away with it.

Absolutly LOADS of cartoons from the 90s are like that if you watch them back now, seems to be the way things were done. Try watching Animaniacs with an adult's eyes! I guess it's still the case now- Adventure Time & Regular Show have big adult followings (though really Regular Show is an adult show- It's rated TV-PG in the US and Cartoon Network UK have to cut a fair bit out to be able to show it!). You can include Spongebob & Gravity Falls in there if you're including stuff from other channels.

Cartoon Network is the only one that advertised being on 24 hours - certainly Nickelodeon only ever used to go on until 11pm, and initially Nicktoons TV closed down at 6 or 7pm until they launched the 'Toons 2 Nite' strand.

Didn't Nickelodeon once do Pirate TV? I seem to recall them closing down as usual at 7pm then coming back on for an hour until 8pm.

Yes. Mostly studio based.
Old Digital Spy post suggests it went on until 10pm at one point but usually finished at 8pm.
