INDEPENDENT Television is doomed...

Actually, as mentioned at TV-ark, Independent TV means not-dependent on the license fee.

I know - not regulated by a government body, not public, funded by advertising etc etc. But I also happen to believe the key to ITV is its regional independence. With corporate mergers going on behind the scenes, ITV becomes more like a conglomerate than a federation of regional franchises, and that's what I don't like.

So what's it going to be then? Carlnada Television?

Still, at least the new London Weekday Television might have a videowall!

I think you'll find that the government have decided in the WHITE paper (ie, not law yet) to lift the restrictions on media ownership ...

That means, Granada and Carlton COULD merge if they wanted, not 'will merge' ...

Not yet, anyway ...

It's still got to be passed into law in parliament.

They will merge, you mark my words...

If a merge were to occur, I don't think it will be a simple amalgamation of Carlton and Granada. Don't forget each group has many entities. Maybe the regional television sectors may merge, or maybe productions. You still have many separate operations within each group which would probably stay away from merger.

I'm not disputing that -- I'm disputing that you said they WERE merging, when they aren't.

They might do in the future, but as DAS has pointed out ITV is still a VERY fragmented organisation.

Don't make such wild claims without checking out the facts!!!!

To demonstrate:

'Granada and Carlton have been announced that they are to arrange a merger.'

When you show me any kind of proof, I will believe this ...

Until then, I know full well that the quote I pulled from your original message is a load of crap.

I think Granada Calton would be a nice enough name afterall Tiger Aspect, AOL Timewarner, Smithcline Beecham

Actually not Smithkline Beecham anymore. Smithkline Beecham merged with Glaxo Wellcome - but sensibly they realised that SmithklineBeechamGlaxoWellcomme (or any other combinaton)was too long. So now the company is referred to as GlaxoSmithkline.
