Don't forget the Ben Elton spoofs - a traffic jam of balloons, one in space,

the Two coming in and tearing a hole in the side of the balloon

I remember seeing it on 'Noel's House Party' where they said the BBC had a new look... and then they crashed the balloon into some hills Laughing

Wasn't Mr. Blobby inside as well?

I'd love to see a clip of that if anyone has it...

I remember that as well and then they played Dario G's Sunchyme afterwards.

It may have been good, but why was the promo graphics so bland and plain? (simple white text overlayed)

Why not? If it works, why bother doing anything particularly snazzy?

It just looked old quickly when looking back on it, especially when ITV and Channel 5 actually did something graphical..

The digital revolution and the move to 16:9 broadcasting was the major consideration in the BBC's 1997 relaunch. But in the case of BBC1, there was simply no way the existing globe could continue because the amount of 16:9 resizing necessary would have compromised the image (see below):

Whereas with the BBC2 idents, there was enough "nothing" in the background to make resizing possible without compromising the image. And with no (apparent) loss of picture quality too - how did they manage that?

IIRC, the 2s were all shot on film. I imagine they must have remastered them from the original film, which having a higher resolution that VT would mean zooming in and cropping was possible with no reduction in quality.

With the BBC1 ident being computer generated at (I presume) standard definition, I guess this wouldn't have been possible.

If they were shot on film, it's amazing that we never witnessed any filmic scratches such as were occasionally visible on the ITV1 celebrity idents (shot on Super 16) some ten years later.

In the early days, film blemishes could be seen on the C4 ident but by 1987 they had all been "cleaned up".

I miss the baloon idents, primary because it was the last incarnation of the globe. Does anyone notice that sound goes for half a second about 1 second into the latest BBC one idents?

That may be a quirk of your STB/IDTV. It's always happened on my Philips IDTV whenever an ident appears on BBC1 or BBC2.

On any Pacific/Duaraband STB's we've had, it was always did this, it also does it on the News 24 countdown for some reason.

I get that on my Goodmans STB - also thought it was very bizarre! Think it happened on the dance ones too.

My VM Pace box used to (it might still do, but I haven't watched any live junctions lately, its all been On Demand) cause the idents, including voiceover, to go completely black and silent on all BBC channels.
