It sounds like a Barry White soundalike singing Ding Dong Merrily on High.........

Shocked

Though they couldn't get much worse than...

Just caught these on the iPlayer - I actually quite like. They're certainly better than last years, and both the Ding dong Merrily on High version and the Holly and the Ivy (Winter Olympic ident) as shown on BBC2 NI at least have a half decent sound track. I guess (or hope) they'll do something a bit more downbeat for introducing the news, but for what they are these do at least improve on last years efforts.

Last year, out of the 4 Christmas idents they aired, not one of them was used into Newsnight, presumably as the soundtrack was deemed too "cheery"? They used Silk instead and wouldn't be at all surprised if they did the same this year as well.

Do they not realise that simply retaining the original soundtracks would give them a pass? Why do they have to sodomise them with crap soundtracks? Part of the reason why the last original Christmas idents worked was down to the slightly eerie music. Replace that with some daft Barry White soundalike, and all the charm goes out the window.

Reluctantly putting aside this absolutely correct sentiment for a just a second, they are at least far more fun than the BBC One ones think they're being.

But yes, it is criminal what they have done to the "Ice Mountain 2" two years in a row now, discarding its wonderful, mystical and perfectly synchronised soundtrack for a cheap gag.

They could have easily used that year's entire package as is. But no, they don't really "get" ident making any more and it's all rather sad.

Merry Oneness.

Yeah. It is pretty sad.

I was watching these video compilations before and it struck me just how well made BBC's Christmas presentation has been in previous years. And of course most of the earlier ones were only seen for a few days. They built up our idea of how good a Christmas ident can be, which is why we are seemingly all Grinch's when faced with a slightly below par Christmas ident.

The 1991 BBC Two Christmas ident in particular is very of its era, but I like it because it tries to be a sort of anti-Christmas ident, something unexpected.

Oh my lord... they have Barry White singing in the background now. This must be a joke??

Better than last year... but .... just leave the soundtrack ALONE! It was fine!!!! ARGH!

ITV is guilty of the same thing. I saw this one used into the news yesterday, after the Christmas idents had started appearing.

It's also rather naff that BBC Two doesn't seem to have received a "This Christmas on Two" style promo with all the upcoming comedies/dramas as per usual (unless I just haven't seen it or it's too early).

The Oneness mini-film has aired on the channel tonight though, which was a bit odd as BBC Two seemed rather excluded from the alleged inclusivity given the massive, ident formatted BBC One logo at the end. Probably should have been a BBC wide thing.

Same here for UTV - they use the ballet ident because itv didn't bother making them a boat ident...
