Tuned into BBC Three at 23:00 for Little Britain and I was presented with a fault caption apologising for the break in programmes. Then the caption faded out and 60 Seconds began with the seconds countdown starting at 16. 60 Seconds went on as normal and everything was then fine into the announcemnt before Little Britain. All this time the BBC Three DOG was coming and going until Little Britain started; then it stayed put. No mention of the fault audibly but I didn't expect one anyway since it's all automated.

There's normally a default, generic set of apology announcements on disc for such an eventuality. Pity most of the time they're not used.

I'd much rather they worked on getting normal programmes back rather than waste time raking around for a minidisc

The problem with pre-recorded continuity annos, in this case, is that the director would have had to fire the anno' at the same time as trying to restore the service (the latter being the most important thing). No live anno to handle the audio side of things and let the director concentrate on getting things back on track.

Not sure of the exact set up for BBC 3 in the Broadcast Centre but the emergency annos may all be on audio server rather than on mini-disc. This might be more difficult to use in a rush than simply opening a fader and hitting play.

There is only one minidisk player/recorder in the Broadcast Centre, and that's not in a TX suite (used to cache onto server if needed). Best in a breakdown to get service back on course then fiddle about with the audio server, plus, if they were in EM cut it wouldn't be of much use anyway,

Says a lot when a brand new state-of-the-art TX centre only has one MD recorder, when I'm surrounded by three of the things here! Let's hope BBC1 and BBC2 take theirs with them. And a CD player wouldn't go amiss...

I saw a rather obscure breakdown on UKTV People a few days ago.

"Sorry for the problem. We're trying to fix the breakdown ASAP. Thank you."

of course it was hardly a breakdown as it appeared for 0.2 seconds without interrupting the programme, and I needed to pause to see it... still interesting though!

Are you "surrounded" by ports from an audio server?

But they don't need them as they've been replaced by something more modern.

You could just as well say 'Says a lot when a brand new state-of-the-art TX centre doesn't have any gramophones' Rolling Eyes

Why, will they need them? Doubt it. Good riddance I say, they were temperamental at best.

But in the event of a breakdown/Ceefax etc. they're limited to what's on the server rather than what's on the shelf. And that will take out the surprise element. Unless someone has the foresight to upload the entire Bruton library...

But then again, computers do crash and have problems. Surely a bit of redundancy wouldn't go amiss? Confused
