BBC plans to save ITV Digital

The BBC is in advanced talks with ITV on a plan which would secure the future of the troubled ITV Digital pay-TV business and ensure free access to the BBC's channels in the digital age ....

....But under a 'digital coalition' scheme involving the BBC, ITV, Channel Four and, potentially, Channel 5, ITV Digital could break-even after less than £150m further investment. The scheme would not involve the BBC committing any money.

The plan involves the UK's free-to-air broadcasters pooling digital terrestrial broadcast and transmission operations and developing a set-top box to deliver free, multichannel digital television

If this means that we have an extended, cheap service which advertises itself as a FTA service with some premium channels as add-on extras, as seems to be signalled here, then this sounds like a brilliant idea. We need to get out of this cycle of everything being subscription-based.

It'll also help kick-start getting more people onto digital. Paying 100 for 20 free channels (hopefully including the likes of Eurosport, Sky News+News 24, Cartoon Network and UK Gold possibly) with nothing further to pay would be an extremely attractive package for many, many people!
