However this type of set will not be required for HTV, thank you all the same.

Yes they do! HTV are in desperate need of a new studio. And I would love to see them get that type of studio!

Is that not what they've got now? The West Tonight?

Oh the West have yes, but not ITV Wales news (formally known as HTV News)

Ohh right... you mean HTV Wales News.

I presume it may be because the Tamar Bridge will be pitch black late at night.
That would also cause problems when the darker evenings kick in.
Then again I could be very easily wrong?

I presume the "late bulletin" image is Plymouth Hoe from in the Sound (as BBC Spotlight uses).

However, the Tamar Bridge/Railway Bridge is fully illuminated at night and would actually look quite nice. I wonder if they are using live images (as BBC do) or just recorded artistic shots - I suppose we will find out one foggy morning when the Tamar Bridge is barely visable through the mist! Smile Smile

I was wondering if their are still studio facilities at Derry's Cross, because if so, it may come from there..... or could it be Seymour Road?

I know a few years ago their were studio facilities at Derry's Cross for a while. But if this is still the case, would they bother trapesing to the other side of Plymouth to set up the broadcast?

Derrys Cross is now a solicitors, there's absolutely no way they'd keep a fully equipped TV studio there.

According to the clip from today they were in Exeter

I thought I read somewhere that a studio within Derry's Cross was left when the building was converted, for what purpose and in what condition I couldn't tell you. Irrelevent now anyway of course as the whole site is to be buldozed and made into a big tower.

Just wondering - looking at the pictures of the Westcountry studios uploaded in the Studio Buildings thread, I take it that the studio is in the left hand corner, where the blue colour ends and the walls are grey?

I'm not sure where the studio is for certain, but IIRC when I took the photo the entire front of the building had windows (presumably for offices). The building is very small, so there aren't many places the studio could go!

From Plymouth Evening Herald today.

Quote:
Plymouth's spectacular Tamar and Albert bridges were lit up in all their glory last night.

The bridges fell under the spotlight as Westcountry television crews filmed a new shot for their evening news bulletin.

More than a thousand watts of lighting and a mile of cabling were used to illuminate the bridges to create the perfect backdrop for the new-look programme.

It took six lighting technicians 10 hours to get the positioning right before TV crews filmed from dusk to darkness.

In charge of the project was light designer Mark Buckingham, of Stage Electrics.

He said three different types of lighting were positioned on either side of the Tamar river to evenly illuminate the two bridges.

He added: "ITV have a new set for their 6pm news programme. Part of that set is a big screen and they were looking for a shot that represented the whole of Devon and Cornwall.

"The Tamar Bridge is the backdrop for the show and, as we move into winter, they needed to change the shot."

Camera crews positioned themselves at Bull Point to film as daylight shifted to night.

It was a major operation in order to achieve just minutes of footage.

Mr Buckingham added: "Safety was our biggest concern because we have a major road bridge and we needed to make sure no-one was dazzled.

"We worked with 12 authorities to make this happen from the Highways Agency, traffic police, Tamar Bridge Authority and Caradon District and Plymouth City councils."

The specialist lights used for the shoot are so powerful they are usually used for major sporting events such as the Commonwealth Games.

Well, I am very surprised by that article Phil. I always imagined the ordinary road lighting on the Tamar Bridge would have been sufficient for a decent image, although obviously the Royal Albert bridge doesn't actually need anything for the trains.

It's also quite revealing that obviously the images on Westcountry Live are not in fact LIVE Smile , which is a shame when BBC Spotlight actually use a live camera at Mountbatten (even if they do slap it onto a CSO background Evil or Very Mad )

Westcountry news tonight... just before 6:30pm, broad daylight over the Tamar Bridge, flick over to BBC1 SW and see the sun setting over Plymouth Hoe Rolling Eyes

And that's why if you look at the thread ''Problems with local ITV sets'' it underlines my argument that pre-recording the image is just silly and leads to errors such as the one you mention.

BBC Wales pre-record their background and you can even see the cut in the loop!

Bring back the spider!
