For those who are interested, Amanda Platell weighs in on the Kaplinsky debate in this week's New Statesman (or, rather, New Stateswoman for one week only), whilst arguing about the lack of women as lead news and politics anchors:
Just thought you all might find that one interesting. You can only see the full article online if you're willing to pay £1 - but here's the link anyway, in case you're feeling flush.
Amanda Platell posted:
From dawn to dusk, TV executives are still opting for the boy-meets-girl presenter combination: enter Dermot Murnaghan and Natasha Kaplinksky, the former on the back of a serious journalistic career, the latter on the strength of her dazzling cha-cha and equally blinding ambition.
If young female presenters are chosen for their lip gloss and dancing ability, who will be surprised when, in 20 years' time, there are no contenders for the heavy-weight hard-news jobs?

I like Moira, Fiona, Darren and Michael Buerk. My favourite presenting team is Bill and Sian.

Methinks that Amanda Platell has it in for all female news anchors..a couple of years ago she wrote the following, when comparing sky (with Adam Boulton reporting) and News 24 (with Guto Hari) coverage of a shadow cabinet reshuffle:
Boulton got the team first, and with the added benefit for viewers of not having to listen to the News 24 anchorwoman Jane Hill. During the Iraq war I dubbed her Jane "Machine-Gun" Hill, due to her habit of going "er er er" all the time. After her dogged commentary on how cold Hari looked, I have renamed her Jane "Inane" Hill.
Wonder who else she has turned her poisoned pen on?

To be fair to her, the New Statesman piece is actually arguing for more female anchors, and she also says that she's "been critical of some of them in the past: that is partly due to it being even more frustrating when a good woman gets it wrong". I can't believe I'm actually sat here defending Amanda Platell - it's not something I ever thought I'd be doing...

From what I have seen from the article above, it doesn't make sense at all because:
a) Most female Newsreaders wear lip gloss;
b) The BBC employed Natasha before she performed and presented on Strictly Come Dancing.
It looks like this Amanda Platell has got some serious issues.

The best female presenter has to be Jane Hill.
Male is slightly more difficult. I rate Matthew Amroliwala highly, as I do Huw Edwards and Dermot Murnaghan (when he's solo-presenting). Bill Turnbull is also a great newsreader.
BTW, I also find Darren's bobbing irritating. Amyone else noticed that he doesn't blink while he reads (unless it's a very long intro) and then closes his eyes in a very obvious fashion when he's finished? Just one of the things that makes him unique, I suppose...

I think you've missed the point.
Yes - female newscasters wear lipgloss - but me thinks Amanda was homing in on the *glamour* issue.
