Nesbitt quits UTV over contracts row
Dramatic move by key co-presenter

by Maureen Coleman

02 February 2006
UTV news anchorman Mike Nesbitt has dramatically parted company with the station after almost 15 years as one of its main presenters, it can be revealed today.

The Belfast Telegraph has learned that Mr Nesbitt, who co-hosts the evening show UTV Live with his wife Lynda Bryans, told station bosses last week that he was not renewing his contract.

It is understood the popular Cambridge-educated father-of-two was not happy with the conditions of the new contract.

According to insiders within UTV, Mr Nesbitt had in the past felt sidelined within the company after supporting former employee Michael Beattie in his High Court action against UTV.

Linda Bryans will stay on as one of the main presenters, along with Paul Clark and Kate Smith.

Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph today, Mr Nesbitt confirmed he was quitting the station.

He said: "I have decided to leave because I just feel very strongly that the time has come to move on.

"I believe it is time for a new challenge and I have several projects in the pipeline.

"I will be sorry to leave behind a very fine bunch of journalists, and above all, will miss working with my wife Lynda, who is a key factor in UTV's success story."

He added: "Lynda is supportive of my decision to go."

Mr Nesbitt would not comment further on his decision to leave.

However Michael Beattie, who sued UTV for negligence and breach of contract two years ago, said he believed the company had not made the most of Mr Nesbitt's talents.

"Personally and professionally Mike Nesbitt is one of the most loyal people I know and is a man of integrity," he said.

"He is one of the best journalists I know and has always been very loyal to the company.

"But it is a great disappointment to me that over the past few years the company has chosen not to make the most of his talents."

Mike Nesbitt began his journalistic career with the BBC in their sports department, before moving on to Good Morning Ulster, where he worked for four years.

He then worked for two years with PR company Anderson Kenny, before joining UTV in 1992.

A new series of Mike and Lynda's programme Home Sweet Home will begin later this month.

A spokeswoman for UTV said: "We are really disappointed that Mike has chosen not to accept his new contract and continue to value his contribution to UTV."

That's a real shock and a shame to hear.

Mike is one of the best things about UTV Live, never mind UTV full stop, a professional and capable journalist but at the same time warm and friendly with the audience, and losing him from UTV screens will be a big disappointment.

So... any thoughts of who will replace Mike on the show?

I wonder if Fearghal McKinney will be promoted to UTV's second male presenter as he appears to be the current sit-in anchor when Paul and Mike are unavailable.

The only other contenders I can think of are Big Ivan, Niall Donnelly and perhaps Robin Taylor or Aidan Browne if they give up their day job?

I could never stand him and his smarminess myself, whatever he's like off-screen.

My bets are on Fearghal. He filled in a lot during the summer when Mike and Paul were away.

Aye, I would say Fearghal as well. Mike will be missed. I wonder if they'll keep the same set-up of fixed presenter pairings, i.e. Paul and Kate will stay together, and Lynda and Fearghal will join forces. You very rarely saw, for example, Lynda presenting with Paul and Kate anchoring with Mike.

UTV will really feel Mike's loss when it comes to Election time. I would think Fearghal will take the reigns here as well - he's got plenty of political experience - Stormont reporting, Sunday Issue, Insight etc.

Funny ending to UTV Live the other day..

Frank Mitchell was anchoring a report he'd made about the polar ice caps melting and when he finished Mike said something akin to "Great to see you Frank, will you be back next week?"

Frank replied, "I certainly will, but the question is, will you Mike?!"

Was Friday evening's UTV Live Mike's last then?

Because Fearghal hosted with Lynda tonight.

Thursday and Friday are usually Mike and Lynda's days hosting Live at Six, so all may be revealed tomorrow.

Although I'm sure given the length of time Mike has spent at UTV (since just before UTV Live started) and how popular a presenter he has been, I'm sure his exit would not be low-key or ignored on screen.

While Fearghal looks like the favourite to take over from Mike when he leaves, I wonder if there's any likelihood that UTV will recruit a new male newsreader or perhaps try to poach from the BBC - probably not Noel Thompson or Mark Carruthers as I can't picture them wanting to leave BBC NI, and Jim Fitzpatrick most likely wouldn't switch channels either (another journalist underused during his time at HavHo IMO).

Additionally, does anyone think time may also be coming to an end for either Paul Clark or Kate Smith? They have been presenting together for almost 18 years (is this the current ITV regional news longevity record?) and if one of the key newsreaders is leaving, perhaps there could be a new broom to sweep clean at HavHo or a desire to bring in younger presenters for UTV Live - something I doubt the audiences would appreciate or tolerate.

Finally, if Fearghal takes up the second male anchor post at UTV Live, will there be a third-rank or sit-in male anchor should Paul and Fearghal both be unavailable? Once Mike leaves, there will be two main presenters plus two male CAs (Robin and Aidan) to choose from, with nine female presenters: Kate, Lynda, Alison and Tina, plus three reporters (Letitia, Tracey and Claire - who only made the main desk once IIRC) and two female CAs (Gillian and Audra).

Will they elevate Frank to the big desk, Gawd help us?!?

Don't worry, he hasn't left just yet, he presented with Kate yesterday when Fearghal and Paul were unavailable!
