In accordance with ITV's daytime policy of dropping anything of public value and replacing them with drama repeats or new versions of old crap, ITV1 are not showing the budget next week.

This channel is really doing itself no favours - is it really too much to ask to drop one episode of Loose Women in order to provide viewers with something other than a BBC view of events?

Another nail in the coffin of ITV News then.

Don't really see the need for ITV to broadcast it. It's just like having the World CUp Final on the two channels.

The content (including tickers) within the budget speech itself is exactly the same, and there is little in the way of commentary/analysis until afterwards - which they'll shift to be included in the Regional News and the Evening News.

The budget coverage was only there so people on this forum could slag it off and say how rubbish it is compared to the BBC's coverage, so no wonder it won't be shown anymore

yes, of course. the budget on ITV only existed so people on an internet forum 'could slag it off.'

what on earth are you talking about?

Actually it served the opposite purpose.

ITV's budget coverage has always taken the angle of how it affects the general public - with the regular tag "What it means for you!", while the BBC's always comes across as more concerned with the politics of it all.

Similarly with the World Cup final, ITV always provided commentary on the match in progress while the BBC just has John Motson telling us that England would obviously have won if this, that and the other hadn't happened!

Have they shown the budget the last few years? I thought it had been a BBC2 thing only for quite a while

I'm not sure if they showed it last year, but there was certainly a budget special on ITV1 in 2005, simulcast with the ITV News Channel. They turned the studio orange. It was all rather lurid. I'll try and dig out some caps.

Edit - the BFI says there was a programme last year. It was essentially an extended Lunchtime News with Alastair Stewart and Katie Derham:

Yep, Alistair Stewart has fronted it the last couple of years, and before that it was Nicholas Owen - though Dermot Murnaghan did it when he was still at ITV.

i remember they used a 'remixed' ITN theme for the titles back in the day as well.

Times have changed, and from what I remember the Budget used to be shown at 3.30pm when I was growing up, and then one year it moved to Lunchtime.

I don't see any reason why ITV must cover it, there are plenty of other outlets to watch it such as BBC2, Channel 4 (if the News At Noon is still on that is), BBC News 24, BBC Parliament and Sky News, why ITV?

It's like showing PMQ's on ITV on a Wednesday at 12pm, theres little or no point in doing so.
