Five had great coverage at 1130 - just before the plane landed. Great presentation with Helen Fospero and John Suchet - live at ALL the relevant locations and also a great usage of Sky's content too.

They'd cut off by the event itself though, hadn;t they!

No coverage from ITV - which is criminal IMO! At the minimum I'd have though This Morning might cross to it.

C4 News did a pretty good job though in the half hour they were on air, certainly my preference over BBC and Sky.

And although the situation requires it, I think it's quite ironic after all the criticisms of how the media coverage from Iran in the last couple of weeks was so controlled and heavily edited - that the MoD are acting in much the same way, if not more so at the moment!

Like you, I anticipated that This Morning would cover it at least briefly, if not go over to ITN for coverage. The fact that they didn't must be quite embarrassing for them, especially since they were the only terrestrial broadcaster not to provide their own coverage. I suppose the flip side to that is that ITV gave those people not wanting to watch the news coverage something else to watch. I ended switching over to BBC1 though.

Why should they? If Channel Five, BBC One and Sky News all have in-depth coverage, what would be the point? You can't accuse ITV of non-commitment to major news stories, think of 7/7. The fact that the hostages were coming home is a large scale news story, but in the eyes of ITV News, it ddoesn't affect our day to day lives, which is an approach they seem to have adopted (to my discontent).
In reference to a post earlier, yes I noticed Sophie calling Ben ''our reporter.'' I bet he felt a little disheartended by that! Ben is far more senior in his capability than Sophie Raworth!

Is there much to gain in showing people getting off a plane? Personally, I think they were right to just leave it to the lunchtime news.

I agree, the amount of coverage has been slightly ridiculous to be honest. It's great news that they're all safe and all that, and it's even better to have good news making the headlines. However, it isn't earth-shattering stuff and I feel the only reason the BBC aired a special was to give their helicopter a spin as its propellers were getting stiff. Shame they couldn't have failed, what with that annoying Richard Bilton reporting.

I see you conveniently edited my post to make it unbalanced in your argument's favour. I had actually made the point that ITV were actually providing something alternative to the news.

And your analogy of the July 7th attacks is not really appropriate. The ITV News Channel existed at that point in time. Now, it does not. That means it is more difficult for ITV News to provide rolling coverage. I suspect that if the ITV NC still existed, they would have chosen to feature the news today because they would have already been doing so, so why not put it on ITV1, too?

Is there much to lose from it though. To be honest I wasn't expecting the ITV News treatment - just the footage to be shown during This Morning, who have discussed the situation in Iran and would be very much interested in the human, rather than political, side of it.

Anyhow, on to more important things - anyone else quite like the graphics we've been seeing from Iranian TV?

Surprise surprise the Brits WERE on an "intelligence" mission when they were grabbed by Iran.

Sky News is breaking the story now.

Rob, I'm sorry for the mix up re post editing. You're right, if the News Channel had existed today, then I'm sure we would have seen some sort of rolling coverage, and it had not occured to me how much easier it was back then to provide such a service as the Channel existed on 7/7. However, Five News does not have a rolling news service, and they still managed to provide continuous coverage on 7/7.
