Have any of you even met the woman? I doubt it. It annoys me that you're talking as though you're at her funeral, but you've simply watched her on the television.

You do not need to "know" somebody to firstly realise and recognise what a skilled journalist she was, secondly to appreciate what a warm person Carol was (which did come across on screen) and thirdly to express condolences towards a person whose death has come as a shock it appears to her friends, family, collegues and viewers.

I'll say it again - Carol was all these things above and she will be sorely missed. It seems even more tragic knowing how difficult the last few years of her life were.

Carol Barnes was an excellent newsreader who appeared on all of ITN's news programmes. She always came across as a very warm person and she always had a smile on her face.

She has a smile on her face while reporting war and murders did she? Please think about what you are saying.

You have taken what I said out of context.

How can davidlees quoting your whole post verbatim (in the same subject thread) possibly be seen as taking your comment "out of context"?

Has anyone heard any comments from Sandy Gall or Alistair Burnet? Don't hear anything from them these days, but maybe they'll say something about Carol.

Or maybe they won't.

A comment is not obligatory, you know.

Don't be pathetic.

Had everyone who turned up to line the route of Princess Diana's funeral procession actually met her? I think not. As Nicholas Owen said today, Carol came across as a genuine person onscreen. As silly as it sounds, viewers really do feel as if they know TV personalities because they're in their living rooms everyday. I don't think there's anything wrong with paying respects to Carol whatsoever. Your comment epitomises the sad decline of the atmosphere in this forum over recent years.

FFS Carol has died and we cannot even be civil with each other Evil or Very Mad I think most of us are genuinely upset at her untimely death.

She certainly had a huge impact on the journalists of yesterday and today. The tributes paid by Alistair Stewart and the rest of her colleagues prove she was popular within her profession as well as the audience. John Suchet's comments about how modest she was were also touching.

May this UK newscasting legend rest in peace.

Your taking me saying 'meeting her' far too literally...

I simply mean that you're basing your opinion of her on her TV appearences, which hardly defines somebody. You may claim that you can tell how she is off screen, but I find some (not all) of the comments on here strange.

How somebody on television comes across onscreen is what will either endear them to the public or make them hated. I never met her and didn't know her but she seemed nice. And if you like someone and they die you will feel sad.

Not many people were lucky enough to meet Ronnie Barker or Eric Morecambe, but the general public took them to their hearts and were sad when they died. Tommy Cooper came across as jovial but Bob Monkhouse told a story where Tommy told somewbody to f*** off. And hearing stories that Bob Monkhouse & Johnny Speight told about Frankie Howerd certainly made me see him in a new light.

But the majority of the public don't know these stories or sometimes the person. They base their opinions on what they see and what they think. It's human nature.

The majority of people on this forum do not know each other and can only form opinions upon what they read. Some people aren't coming across well...

What a terrible loss. A sad day for news, Peter Sissons is trying his best not to cry..

R.I.P Carol

Peter handled the story excellently I thought. "The Bluest eyes you'd ever seen" he said, struggling to hold back tears.

That was very touching. Well done Peter for being so human. People take the p*ss out of him for the occasional blunder, but he did Carol proud this afternoon.
