Channel 4 confirms five-year news deal

John Plunkett
Wednesday April 5, 2006

Channel 4 News will hire more than 20 new staff and open a bureau in Beijing as part of a five-year deal signed with producer ITN.
Jon Snow, the Channel 4 News anchor, is tied to the programme for the duration of the new deal, up to 2010.

The deal will also see Channel 4 News launching a range of new multimedia services, including an interactive website and four 90-second mobile phone TV news updates a day.

New journalists will be recruited in Africa, the Middle East and far east, including a foreign affairs specialist. A new state-of-the-art newsroom will also be built at ITN's London headquarters.

Full details in the Media Guardian article - the only thing of note really is the contract can be broken if a change of ownership at ITN affects the quality of the output (i.e. if ITV buy out ITN)

As I've said before though they wouldn't want it branded as an ITV News production, C4 take a number of programmes from ITV (including Countdown) - and I personally don't see why having ITV News as a producer would be any worse than having Sky News. I'd imagine like ITV Productions are branded Granada except on ITV, the ITN name would remain as producer of non-ITV content - if not ITV News itself.

Fully agree, BB.

ITN 's Channel 4 News is miles ahead of many others, in terms of quality and content.

And I guess that, for many viewers, Jon Snow IS Channel 4 News, so it's not surprising that he is also part of the deal.

Thanks for posting this.

They could call it 'A Granada News' production... although that might be even more confusing. Wink

I agree with James that Channel 4 News is consistently excellent, and I'm very pleased that they've stuck with ITN. Just speculation, but I do wonder if ITN has only been able to commit more resources to C4N since the closure of the ITV News Channel. Perhaps a small silver lining?

Also since the last renewal Five News has gone too - and C4 has more cash to spare now!

If there getting a new state-of-the-art Newsroom, is this a inkling of a state-of-the-art studio maybe?

In what way is the studio not state of the art?

Yyyyyyyyeeeessss! This is the news I've been waiting for for ages! Classic! This means only one thing - that C4N is the best ever news programme that ITN have produced in their history!

*The Newscasters/Reporters/other Journalists are just top Quality
*The studio was the first in it's kind b4 5 News came along, and is still looking amazing! Even at it's age.
*The amount/quality of journalism is just so superior compared to eveyone else.
*The show will never ever be dumbed down unlike the others.

Nice one ITN - Keep up the good work. ITN - UNMISSABLE NEWS!

I imagine they mean the actual Newsroom - just a change in the way they do the behind the scenes stuff.

Though the current studio is basically the same as 1999, it was refreshed last year and probably has a few good years left in it yet!

I think Channel 4 made the right decision on this matter. All their neighbouring terrestrial competitor's news shows have taken a steady or drastic dip in quality or content over recent years. C4 news is the best news show with a serious agenda now.

This thread has started me on a long think about C4 News....

I am sure that Jon Snow is the longest serving main anchor of C4 News, but your post Brekkie Boy, started me on thinking of all the others who have been main anchors on the programme.

I recall that Sissons was the pioneer, when the programme (and the channel) was launched back in 1982. (Does anyone else remember the clipboards and lack of desk, revolutionary at the time)??

I can recall Alastair Stewart, Zeinab Badawi, Nicholas Owen and Alex Thomson as main anchors (plus several other secondary presenters who deputized...)

But, have I missed anyone out from the list of mains?

Also, who was the politician who famously ripped off his mic and stormed out of the studio whilst being interviewed live on air by Sissons?

I wish ITN's C4 News was available overseas. It is indeed a highly credible offering from an otherwise "now plain" ITN.
