on the subject of bbc weather - whats with this "FEELS LIKE" replacing "wind chill" - do they really think we're that stupid?

I was hoping someone would bring that up. I watched it on mute last night - all very confusing.

I think this is an American idea brought in to the BBC Weather department. Accu-Weather in the US use the term "RealFeel Temperatures" for wind chill, and this is the same basic idea, given a British twist.

Don't think they are quite the same thing - wind chill takes just the wind into account - "feels like" takes in other factors as well I believe, and is thought to be a more useful bit of information, but as it isn't wind chill it can't be called wind chill.

I think it probably is the same thing, you know. Unless its also accounting for the "slush factor" and "your cigarette holding hand will feel *this cold* as you walk to work".

Just seen the weather website:

Holy moly! I forgot how large Scotland is.

Suppose there's no danger of it appearing in this view on-screen any time soon.

No danger. You get a certain amount of space on screen depending on how many people live there!

On the 1pm News the weather was promoted at 1.15pm. Don't recall that happening before, but I assume it was just because of the snow.

Think it includes concepts like cloud cover hiding the radiant heat of the sun, rain making it "feel" cooler etc.

I heard one of the presenters on the Today programe sounding baffled at it the other day - saying something like "'feels like' - that presumably means it'll be n degrees..."

Liam Dutton on BBC Breakfast this morning, his first time on BBC One I think, aside from the regional forecasts.

Yes, cos thats exactly how the weather should be done! Rather than actual geographical area! And how many folk actually live in South-West England, cos it seems to be unfairly covered more.
