Did they have a soft area back then?

They definitely had a soft area for at least a short time after the 2000 corporate relaunch. It consisted of two small comfy armchairs.

Back then, did they use any interesting camera shots?, such as the opening from a different side of the studio etc.

Any caps?

How on earth are we supposed to answer that? I'm not entirely sure which era you are even talking about. Which of the following eras do you mean:

pre-2000 - NWT own unique identity
2000-2002 - first BBC English Regions corporate look (blue/yellow map titles)
2002-2004 - second BBC English Regions corporate look (red/orange titles with location shots)
2004-2007 - BBC London inspired look
2007-2008 - NWT unique look
2008-present - third BBC English Regions corporate look

Yes, your thread title says 2002-2004, yet your first post asks about the era when NWT had its own regional identity. If you had done your research properly, you would have realised that the period to which your thread title refers was actually just a second English Regions corporate look rolled out across the country. The only periods of time when NWT has had a unique regional identity were pre-2000 and 2007-2008. Maybe you should make yourself clearer if you want people to respond to your questions.

What?! BBC 'regional identity' hasn't changed - we've only ever had English regions idents before regional programmes, and non-news programmes in the form of series such as 'Inside Out'. In the North West, the only changes are the recent loss of idents and regional shows on Granada. News hasn't changed at all.

(edited for spelling error)

Not strictly true. In the 70s and 80s the English regions blanketed network presentation for many junctions during the day - meaning there were continuity announcers in many regions most of the day, reading the same (or different scripts) Bizarre I know - but apparently the case... This is why most old English Regions buildings had "Pres"/"Self-op" studios long before Breakfast Time...

Indeed and there are some examples of this on TV Ark. For example, there's a clip of fully regional BBC South late news and closedown, complete with BBC South Globe, clock and national anthem:
BBC South at TV Ark

AIUI, English regional presentation died out in the early 80s, yet "Presentaton" studios remained in use in the older centres until relatively recently.

Judging by a BBC1 Midlands closedown clip which has recently gone online at TV Ark, it appears the practice was discontinued in 1979, as part of the "BBC Economy Cuts". BBC North West were still in their broom cupboard as late as 2003 I think, you could tell they were in there as the CSO was poor and you always heard a loud thud when they started their bulletins.
