Last Monday I think. Midlands Today got caught out on Monday as the closing music started playing during the weather with Shefali and they suddenly cut from the outlook for the week ahead to Nick and Suzanne saying good bye very briefly.

Didn't someone say in one of the threads that it was just a 4-week trial for the English regions to do their own national and international headlines round-up, thus leading pretty much from the regional news into the 7pm programme? Given that it was a trial, I suppose they may bring such an arrangement back but are currently reviewing it.

The 4 week trial was during the 4 week run of The One Show.

That was back in August/September, when the regions handed over to The One Show in Birmingham before returning to do the headlines at 7:25pm.

There has been a similar 4 week trial in the past month with the regions being allowed to continue up to 7pm and hand directly to the next junction on condition they do a round up of the national headlines themselves.

This could and should have been mentioned in The BBC News Thread.

I think MT only did it for a week or two personally, then dropped the update, running right up to 7pm with their own stuff.

London have been doing the international and national heads summary at 18:55 for the English regions again since Monday 6th November.

I've never seen the point of the 6:55pm national update, ever since it's existed.

Back in the days (pre-1999) when "the six" and the 6:30pm regional news were two totally separate entities, the regional programmes simply included some national/international stories amongst the headline recap approaching 7pm. (Midlands Today certainly did, I assume all other regions did too?)

So what happened during The One Show period, and in recent weeks, was a return to the old days. I wish they'd keep it that way. What's the point in the Six presenter hanging around from 6:30pm - 6:55pm, just to present for typically less than 120-seconds?

Only the BBC English Regions have ever taken the 6:55pm update from TVC. The BBC Nations have always continued with the pre-1999 way of doing things, so why can't England?

The BBC obviously wants Average Joe viewers to percieve The Six as "a single one-hour long show, 25-minutes of which just happens to be a regional split-off", rather that two separate 30-minute shows.

I can understand this from the point of view of wanting to keep viewers with BBC One for the whole hour. But, they can achieve this simply with the current 6:30 handover (i.e. by handing straight from The Six to the regions with no trailers/ident to create a gap, they shoehorn viewers into watching the regional show). So, having the 6:55pm update achieves nothing. If they've already managed to get any given viewer to still be watching by the time that 6:55pm arrives, then they've already achieved their goal.
