No Breakfast briefing, and other stories (December 2004)

Just a couple of random observations which I thought I'd squash altogether into one N24 thread.

Noticed there was no early Breakfast Briefing at 0600 this morning. Was this something to do with Blunkett? Or a tech/presenter problem? Or perhaps a broader editorial decision?

All manner of nonsense was unleashed at the top of the hour with a standard N24 headlines aston animating onto the screen during the pre-titles headlline, then animated off, and then returned with different detail text (but the same headline) just as the titles began. It remained onscreen through the titles before finally animating off again.

One of my customarily dreadful caps, courtesy of the mobile:

Also, a couple of weeks ago, I was watching N24 of an evening, when a chap was being interviewed. Looks like someone forgot to choose a background before going on air...

One day, I'd love to watch N24 and not see some completely avoidable graphics cock-up. Ain't gonna happen though.

Most probably. I remember there was also no Breakfast Breifing on the morning Yasser Arafat died. It seems they drop it when there's a big news story to cover.

EDIT: Oh, and just thinking about it, surely the CSO background error would be the fault of whoever was operating the remote studio - not necessarily the BBC.

Yeah, I realise that - my point was more one of reference to the dozens of graphics errors that appear on N24 every day; it was just a glib, loose connection to the aforementioned graphics cock-up during the title sequence.

You wouldn't have anything to talk about if N24 didn't make cock ups!

I seem to keep seeing the bottom line of the aston with text which is slightly too large for the space. I thought the system was supposed to resize to fit or prevent this in some other way?

And I've actually recently seen the Breaking News globe twice in the last few days after not seeing it for ages.

I think it only resizes the big headline.

I had some ideas on how they could alter the current system to make it a bit more effective, must get them written down over the hols.

Why, today (21.12.04) did the name of Bagdad keep on moving from top teft hand corner to the bottom right?

I presume this is in readiness for the new pooling arrangement on BBC One. If what is being said over on the other thread is right, Jon Sopel is moving to Breakfast (and maybe from the N24 set) so changes would been needed at N24.

It was during Blairs speach in Iraq. I think that the reason they were trying to have the location tag on the bottom right was because it was close to Blairs head in its normal position. However during the speach there was two other pieces of Breaking News announced via the aston, so the location aston was moved back, so that is was clear that it was not relating to the Breaking News.

(I know I'm not newswatch, but I happened to have News 24 on this morning)

If it was me i'd completely overhaul the rota - if the one does simulcast with News 24 then would the presenter(s) continue on News 24 afterwards (it would make sense otherwise you would have to change the times of the shifts - something which I would do anyway though!) Razz
