10.30 now seems to be a decent alternative to 6.30

You're lucky then. Here in the south, the 10:30 is nothing more than the short version, p-a-d-d-e-d out
with a totally pointless and irrelevant OB, fluff about Facebook, and a padded out weather forecast.

Last night's pointless OB was from a rural railway station, about a local mental hospital Go figure, presumably
the hospital wasn't illuminated, so the next best thing to go and stand outside of was the railway station ?

What a waste of (OUR) money

You should definitely drop them a line at BBC South expressing your views. A lot of dinosaurs at Havelock Road.

I think I will, and copy it to the BBC Trust too

Go for it!

To be honest - if the sat truck is owned and the space segment on a long lease (so arguably not using the truck and space segment is more of a waste of money), and the crew now working a late day, it won't have cost, incrementally much more than the diesel to run the genny and get to the location. If it was there already for the 1830 opt, then even the fuel to/from would have been paid for. Possibly a meal payment or two.

Lives are cheaper than newly edited packages of the same duration usually... (Which may not be available as there may not be people sitting waiting to cut them)

That may well be the case, but it doesn't look good to the average viewer, standing outside a deserted rural railway station at 22:30hrs, delivering a piece to camera about a nearby mental hospital, on a story that really
only warranted a minute of air time. It sends completely the wrong 'message'
