Until recently they did use a backdrop of the city, and it looked naff IMO. Problem with Cambridge is due to how spread out the city is and the lack of any iconic tall buildings its hard to choose a good shot to use which would cover most the landmarks. The only good shot they could use really is Kings College, but that is so overused its probably best avoided.

Also, given their broadcasts are the main programme at 6:30 and the 10:30 bulletin, it's only during the summer on the 6:30 programme they have a backdrop that actually shows anything. While the newsroom looks generic, it does look better than the backdrop and helps brighten the studio.

The other problem in Cambridge is that at night a lot of the buildings, like Kings College Chapel, aren't floodlit and street lighting is quite low level, so for large parts of the year you'd end up with a black hole (as the Cambridge opt currently does) behind the presenter.

That ended a couple of months ago - they already do use a fake newsroom shot.

I think thats actually a blurry version of the Norwich newsroom - so sort of half fake.

Coincidentally, as the Cambridge-based operation is about to move premises, the main studio (at The Forum in Norwich), is having a revamp.

Whilst the work is going on there, Look East will be coming from a temporary studio (in a corner of the newsroom) for a week or so.

I hadn't noticed that! It isn't a very good fake though - there are never that many people in the Norwich newsroom.

Back to the new set, if they pull it off as well as Hull do, I don't think it'll look half bad on screen. Not keen on the big sea of red around the screen, though.

No much given away on the sunday bulletin with Stewart just a single camera shot with a static blurry Forum. But Jim Bacon stood by a plasma screen for the weather. I was hoping for a proper open newsroom shot.

The fake newsroom on the Hull set looks pretty good, I *think* it's basically a photo blow up with some strategically placed lighting to subtly "animate" the various monitors so it's not as static as you might think.

Indeed that's what there are. Looks odd in the studio itself but on TV I think it is pretty convincing

This evening's Look East used three shots. A wide showing Stewart and Suzie and the others being close ups on each other. The weather was presented from a balcony looking out of the Forum showing the Christmas tree outside.

This evenings 90 seconds update might have come from Cambridge. It was presented by Jonathan Park and showed a region-wide weather map - normally the map would be focused on one half or the other.

Cant understand why they cant just sit infront of the newsroom!

Hopefully with Cambridge getting improved facilities this will end the horrid crashing of the titles for us lot in the west sub opt. Can't believe it's allowed to go on still, it makes the whole opening of the programme look extremely messy.

Whats the betting that the LE set in Norwich will be a mirror image of the Cambridge set albeit on a larger scale. So much for a desk being 'a barrier' between Stewart and Susie and us - the viewers, which was why they got rid of the desk in the first place 6 years ago when they moved to the Forum.

I doubt it'd be that much larger. The Norwich studio is minute!

If they do still want to keep the desk-less set, I think they could do worse than having a mini version of the BBC Breakfast set using light boxes ala Hull and Cambridge with perhaps a couple of big (ish) screens chucked in.

It will be interesting to see. I hope they get updated titles and the same music as South East Today. Only one more full edition left with 3 camera shots...thank goodness!
