But it's only a GIF! It appears at exactly the same time as the text for me - but the Lycos ad-frame meant the page took 15 seconds to load - on broadband - I don't know if you got the frame, but Lycos, not me, is certainly the problem here.

The frame is also causing the jumping. What a bummer.

hmm, the frame loads fine, as does your text, but the text goes from something like this

[code:1:5bac9bd288]
PPmsanfndsflk
PPnjkgfdnjkfnd
ndngjkfgjknjkrgfjk
jgrenjrkfghjktrnjk
jofkdgfkjgkfjklgjgfkl
[/code:1:5bac9bd288]
to
[code:1:5bac9bd288]
PPPPPPPPPjewfkef
PPPPPPPPPmkfmkf
PPPPPPPPPkglfgkfkl
PPPPPPPPPmkfdmfk
PPPPPPPPPkfdlkddkfl
PPPPPPPPPkdkkdlkfl
PPPPPPPPPkflkflklgkl
PPPPPPPPPkdkkgflkd
[/code:1:5bac9bd288]
where P is the picture.
Woah! I'll log on right away and fix that...

EDIT: That particular image should now be fixed. OF course, there's still others need sorting out...

That's a lot better, even a <CTRL>+<SHIFT>+(Click Refresh) loaded it a lot neter

However, the Doctype is meant to be the very first line, and i've also been taught to put all Script's within either a seperate file or within the <head> elements.

{oops, sorry just realised that's Lycos' screwing of the page - but i'll leave it in as that's normally a valid point}

Sounds like the tags were automatically added when he saved the file. Some programs (Microsoft Word and Frontpage, Macromedia Dreamweaver, etc) add their own tags when you save. That might be The TV Room's problem. If that's so, it isn't the webmaster's fault, so leave him alone!

I know it's FrontPage (Dreamweaver MX is very good and was developed with a team from the Web Standards lobby thing). I'm just ignoring you now anyways.

Do you use Dreamweaver MX?

If so would you say it's worth switching to, from Dreamweaver 4?

I do use Dreamweaver MX - it's very worthwhile. MX is much more stable due to the panels being integrated and it puts far more emphasis on CSS and puts out pretty much perfect (X)HTML straight out of the box.

Hmm, that's odd. Check http://members.lycos.co.uk/digifiend/DN - the images have no height and width tags, so I think I need to know if I have that problem you describe. Wherever I am, they always seem to use IE, so I've never tested it in other browsers.

TSK @ you not bothering to cleverly javascript out the new nasty weird lycos advert and deactivating content below the final </html> that lycos puts in...

And how exactly would one go about using JavaScript, to technically infringe the Lycos T&C's . . . ?

DJGM is right. If I remove the ad, the site would be closed down for sure. No thanks. Besides, when you use the html editor to change the page without first using the WYSIWYG editor, the new code can't be seen - it autoforwards to an ad server, hiding it's address. Very annoying. No surprise most of the websites I know don't have Tripod addresses now. If only I could download everything I've uploaded, then upload them somewhere else in just two easy steps. Unfortunately, it's not that easy. Sad

but lycos have so many sites they wouldn't even be able to bother viewing yours - the only time it starts attracting attention to them is when the file to html ratio gets too high.

Ah but does removing lines to createt less bandwidth endup being more important in this day and age of broadband that ease of viewing source?

Which is easier: (it creates a function which,when activated, prints to the page what is in the prompt)

<SCRIPT Language="JavaScript">
function goprint()
{
var txt = prompt("Type text","")
document.write(txt)
}
</SCRIPT>

or

<SCRIPT Language="JavaScript">function goprint(){var txt=prompt("Type text","");document.write(txt);}</SCRIPT>

they'll bothwork the same, but the first is esaier, and it only saves a pittance of bandwidth.

Also, by your reconing, surely a site without the "<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">" rubbish, which still views the same, is better? I see HTML and HEAD tags going out the window soon...

Also the background colour of a web page should be definined in the style sheet, not in the body tag. tsk.

If you are using that script over and over again, you can put it in a js file and link refrence it, it will automatically be cached as well!

Correct. Contrary to what many people think, I do not spend every hour of every day working on that site. Much of the material is produced in large blocks, broken over a couple of days. I then put bits and pieces online during the week.

I don't usually spend much time on it during weekdays as I have many other commitments, including callout support for my employer - the job that actually pays the bills!!

TV Room is never going to be perfect. It's a hobby site, not a career. I'll keep saying this until it finally registers.

I'm responding to this thread out of courtesy to one of the main participants who has PMed me. I will look into some of the points raised. However, I am simply not in the position of being able to invest the time in updating the site so that it appears all nice and lovely on browsers other than IE.

If the stats are to be believed, 96% of visitors to TV Room view the site through IE. For a non-profit making outfit, I'm not unhappy about the situation.

I appreciate the fact that given time and effort, it is possible to create a pretty similar look using CSS. However, I stress again - I do not have the time to go through 800 pages and make the necessary, very painful adjustments.

To put things in perspective - making such a change would be like pumping the BBC ONE programme-making budget into BBC FOUR. Not worth the expense for such a tiny audience!!!! And since I'm not getting paid for it - even more unjustifiable!!!!!!!!!!

If you use Dreamweaver's find and replace facility, you wouldn't then have to trawl through 800 pages to correct code.Smile

Anyway I think it's an excellent site, and it does the job!

OK, thanks
