They're slowly rolling out a version with a slightly different UI, and have been doing so for over a month. It's not groundbreaking, it's just making a black bar semi transparent, and it's not something that everyone is seeing - yet (although anyone can opt in by editing their cookies).
I don't know if it's related, or something I've done without realising it, but as of today YouTube videos refuse to play at the correct size - or rather, they will only play at the "correct" size, refusing to scale to fit the player window. This is with Firefox. Chrome is okay, obviously.
And the controls keep disappearing, but still work.

Same issue with Firefox here too. Fine with Chrome and IE.
S'funny, I thought I'd just narrowed it down to a setting I switched yesterday, but forgot about. Just in case it's your issue too:
Go to about:config
Filter the results to find layers.offmainthreadcomposition.enabled
If it's false, switch it to true and restart.
If it's true, switch it to false and restart. Then switch it back to true and restart again.
All i've noticed is that over the past day or so at 1 and 10 seconds into a video the player goes black and you have to pause and play again for the video to work.
