Well I think the production reason is that the TARDIS set was not built with HD in mind,

It's not like there was only enough detail to look good on SD. The new Exec just wanted to make a few changes and put his own stamp on the show. A change is as good as a rest.

I haven't seen 'Battlefield' for ages, but that dark version of the console room looks quite good, does it look as good on screen as it does in that picture? I know they were trying to hide the damaged set, but theres something about the darkness of the set with only the console being lit that makes it look good. BBC shows of that era were always so overlit.

It looks ok, until Ace walks past and the curtain moves Laughing

Apparently it was a curtain with cut out holes, I also have these here:

This is what Mike Tucker would have liked to have done, had Season 27 been given the green light, JNT was supposedly going to let him redesign it & Mike Tucker wanted to do a floating console had the show not been cancelled. The two pics without Sylvester were of a smaller scaled model, the two with him were of a bigger scaled model with him blue screened in. It can be found on the Surivial DVD Smile

There was detail, just cheaply made... the specials in HD proved that by how the coral pillars looked... well... naff. Laughing And the rest of it was starting to look battered and bruised aswell, which in SD can be hidden.

I believe that's what RTD said, I believe also that he originally said he wasn't going to film in HD because it would be too expensive as well. However since Planet Of The Dead it has been filmed in HD so I supposed Moffat probably though sod it I'll just design a new Tardis room.

Again I may have misread/misheard this but I believe at one point they said the console room originally wasn't going to be replaced, it's just that when they tested HD cameras on it that it looked battered.

From what I understand though the console itself will largely be the same but with a few little tweaks, according to a set report I read on GB.

And yet what I've heard is that, although a similar colour scheme, the entire setup is new with staircases, new walls, new controls, etc...

Here's a question.

Looking back at the old photos reminded me that the very first console from the classic series was revealed to be green in colour(when it appeared in the Pertwee story 'Inferno') as pale green viewed in black & white looked more white than white (according to something I read years ago!).

Now those of you who bought the Peter Haining ' The Key To Time' reference book back in the mid 80's will remember the photo section featuring publicity shots including one from 'Inferno' showing the green console.

You will also remember the colour picture of Hartnell standing by a WHITE console.

Did the original console start out as white, then repainted pale green later, as I'm pretty sure the technology wouldn't been there to **** about with a picture back in the 60's surely?

Well I would have though that if they were replacing the whole set then they would have replaced the console as well.

The problem is at the mo that info on the new Tardis console room at the mo seems to be all over the place, the only known images that can "legally" be shown are those posted on here from the trailer & an image that was taken on location by one of the spoiler hounds, which was the "blown up photo" of the set.

There is going to be new staircases & new walls however it's just the news on the console itself that seems to be a bit all over the place, some have reported it's exactly the same, some that it's the same basic design with bits added/removed & some that it's a completely new console.

That's the problem with the set/location spoiler threads & rumour threads, they sometimes have so much traffic on them on GB at times that it's hard to keep track of the threads half the time Laughing

I'm not entirely sure, I believe it may have been.

Hang about, no it wasn't, if these promo picture of Troughton is anything to go by, providing it was originally taken in colour, and not colourised at a later date:

Although having said that, I don't know if it's just the quality of the scans but the second one is not only flipped but has a lot more colour, the other one certainly looks more monotone. EDIT: Seems the first pic has been flipped, all other versions of this pic show it as the second one

I'll see if I can find any more

EDIT: Here we go:

So it seems to be a grey white. The MkII console, as you can see in those pics on page 1, got repainted several different colour schemes over the years

I knew the Tardis set had changed in the classic series but I didn't realise how many times. But noticeably, the control room in the 2005 series was very different to anything in the classic series. Thanks for the link to the Children in Need episode - I remember Peter Davison's Doctor mentioning the differences!

For series 5, we have a different version of the TARDIS exterior, the police box. You can see in the trailer on the site that the TARDIS seems to be bluer and the window panes are different, with the two on bottom left and right being darker than perviously.
