Anyone think its strange how Sky brand themselves? First of all, they use two different types of logo. Then on services such as Sky Player, they just use the "s" from their logo? I mean what is that about? "s" could mean anything.
Surely to create a strong brand and have a strong presence, is to have a unified logo serving all of its services?
Even its channel's uses different Sky logos. In this day and age, they should be reinforcing the Sky brand as much as ever.
in the UK, they do this, however in Germany Sky Deutschland use the Sky corporate logo throughout their channels, not sure why in the UK that thet use two, in the early 90s you never saw this, you saw one Sky logo and the only thing they modified was the colour of the ring.
Also in italy, where there is Sky Italia, their corporate Sky logo is again enforced on all the channels and products so to answer your question, this only happens in the UK!
The only good thing is the corporate font is a lot better in the UK.
Aren't Sky rebranding each of their channels with the small case corporate logo when they get a new image. It has resulted in a bit of a mish mash at the moment but I guess they didn't just want to update everything to the small case logo only for another (planned) rebrand for a particular channel to come along a few months later.

I never have understood where these ideas came from. Sky Sports commissioned a new uppercase typeface for Sky Sports last year in the same style as the Uppercase sky sports logo.
Unless some statement of intent is issued or indication that sky box office, movies, sports and the betting channels are changing I will just see it as wishful thinking.
It's been the same since 1998 when Sky dropped the Egg logo in favour of 'sky' for corporate reasons and 'SKY' on the channel idents. It's also worth noting that since May 1998 the whole lot of Sky channels haven't rebranded at the same time, where as previously they used to. For instance Sky One was the first channel to drop the egg logo in May 1998, it took until October for the rest of the channels to rebrand. Same again in 2002 when the Sky font changed to the current one, it took almost a year to be fully implemented.
Although it's been going for over a year now, Sky's 1-3, Real Lives and Arts all have the lowercase logo where as News, Movies and Sports use the uppercase logo's, even though these channels have all had rebrands within the last couple of years.
In my mind it was always SKY for the TV channels, sky for the corporate side. One channel then rebranded using the lowercase logo and most, but not all, Sky channels followed suit in their subsequent rebrands.
The 'sky' logo seems to fit well with the entertainment channels (particularly Sky1/2/3) but is lacking in gravitas for use with Sports or even Movies (the director of Sky Sports ensured the uppercase version was used in the 2007 package).
It's not an ideal situation but it's nowhere near as messy as the BBC's current branding strategy.

When I first saw the new Sky Player logo, my immediate thought was 'stv'.
Sky is to begin a major rebrand this month in an attempt to present a warmer image and replace the BBC as the UK’s “most loved and respected source of entertainment, “report Ben Fenton and Tim Bradshaw: “A new Sky logo featuring a more rounded ‘S’, which is intended to convey a friendlier corporate persona, would be unveiled in coming weeks as the company begins a pre-Christmas marketing push, people familiar with the logo said. Marketing experts said such a rebranding could cost Sky between £500,000 and £1.5m, although others suggested that range could be conservative. The image overhaul comes as Sky puts the finishing touches to Sky Songs, a subscription digital music service expected to launch before Christmas, as the group continues to expand from TV into online services. Sky’s management hopes the new identity will help it achieve its aim to ‘replace the BBC as the country’s most loved and respected source of entertainment’, according to a person familiar with the company’s plans. BSkyB said yesterday that the strength of its brand had been a big asset, but added: ‘We’re making some evolutionary changes to help us keep reaching out to more customers over time.’” (FT p17)

They're going to do that by making the "S" more rounded?
