Thanks for your support, everyone -- I'll limit my links from now on. Smile

Here's a YouTube video showing a newscast that was really ahead of its time. You may think that having the presenters stand and walk around while delivering the news was a concept that emerged in the 1990s, but these amazing clips are actually from the late 1970s:

That music is FABULOUS

Very "cutting edge" for the 70's isn't it, and he is standing, prehaps that's where ITV and BBC News got the idea from. Laughing

Anyone familiar with the 1970s instrumental hit Classical Gas by Mason Williams? You can listen to it HERE.

Later on today, I'll post clips of American TV stations using a part of the music (beginning at 1:11 in the clip above) as their news theme.

Loving this thread, some great finds!

It inspired me to do some more fishing around Youtube and found a few interesting BBC/ITN bits, some of which I've seen elsewhere and others which are new (to me anyway):

The 1st BBC News of the morning of Diana Princess of Wales' death after BBC World's overnight coverage - think it was 6am ?: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNsdvhh8_X0

BBC2 newsflash - Kegworth air crash, 1989: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLh7bMnlNyU

Lockerbie air crash news reports:
BBC1/2 and ITN: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgedAlze9P0&mode=related&search=
BBC2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gZxx3fsQXQ

Hillsborough disaster - excerpts from Grandstand and ITV sport from the afternoon, and BBC and ITN news: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GySQFrwCHvQ

Challenger Space Shuttle disaster - Phillip Schofield in the broom cupboard leading into Newsround where the news was first broken: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tb0G8Q5Oz_k&mode=related&search=

Emperor Hirohito's death announced - quite surprised that this made 'newsflash' status, but here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kogNv61vsOM

1987 Zeebrugge ferry disaster, BBC News reports: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5xgY8c_xXE

Tiananmen Square massacre 1989, BBC coverage including Kate Adie's famous report: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7PRdz3v-_w

Heysel stadium tragedy, 1985 - ITN newsflash: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ty9EHKIexMc

Some great additions there!

Here's a long 1979 clip of ITN's News at 545 , the first day back after a strike that left ITV off the air for weeks:

And here is coverage of John Lennon's murder, as seen on Chicago's WBBM:

The first clip doesn't appear to be playing ATM, so here's another from the same station (the clip includes commercials):

To wrap up our look at U.S. local news (for now), here is a masterfully produced promotional presenation for WBBM's (Chicago) local news from 1983:

This is a fascinating overview of one of the best local news operations in TV history.

Interesting to see BBC World actually going back to the sport even though it was obvious something serious had happened there.
