Remember 'The Geek Show' from Manchester's local station? An episode of which was posted in this very thread just under a year ago, resulting in such high critical acclaim as:

God that's painful.

and
SHUT IT DOWN. SHUT THE WHOLE CHANNEL DOWN.

Well, it's still running and someone's written an article about it, with similarly high praise such as:

Quote:
It’s a soulless, passionless, pointless thirty minutes of two people sitting on a sofa gurning into an apparently echoing chasm where there are no viewers except their own reflections.

VMPhil thats a great find. And I think the writer sums up so many problems with ThatsTv in general. There is no passion and pointless. But the article also reminds us what ChannelM was. It was so ahead of its time. Imagine what it would look like today? Im sure it would have found a fairly decent audience by now. Too bad the MEN group didnt have the balls to sustain it until the local stations scheme launched. ChannelM was brilliant. It certainly wasnt perfect but they had a watchable Breakfast show. Noon, Evening, Night newscasts. They produced relevant watchable music programs. Had they they ability to get some syndicated programming for their primetime...like LondonLive...coupled with their newsteam backed by the MEN...im sure it would have found a more secure financial footing.
BREAKFAST

News at 9pm (Citytv Format)

CityTv's CityPulse Open (Similar Theme and Graphics...sorta)
Worth noting the differences in "pacing" on both opens. Citytv does a hard from the graphics in timing with the music and then a quick camera zoom on the anchors and Gord give a quick 'Here's what Toronto's talking about talk about today". Such a smart quick reminder of what the broadcast is. When you compare it withe ChannelM open its a bit more laborious. As the program title flashes up instead of a quick live take it slowly fades and then you get a too wide shot then the camera slowly rises instead of dramatically zooming in like Citytv. Then you get the really long sentence from Mr Crane reminding your of what the show is and reminding you its coming from Ubris.

Ha! I see Ben Bland even managed to present some World News back then - as the bit at 4:42 shows.

Made in Birmingham have got a video journalist to the scene of a stabbing in Wolverhampton fairly quickly this morning. The story only broke about half an hour before.

What a contrast to Big Centre TV, where you'd be lucky to get a package out for tomorrow.

Interesting as it's just outside their area on DTT, most people there will be Wrekin viewers, although it will be carried on Sky and cable there.

These local channels have taken the old commercial radio trick of expanding their coverage area to make them look more viable.

To be fair, it makes sense to cover the wider West Midlands rather than be centred on Birmingham, it's just unfortunate that aerials on the western fringes are more likely to be pointing a different way.

There's little signal from the L-Mux antennas at Sutton Coldfield beamed that way anyway, so reception is unlikely for most, though I'm told Comux have made noises about adding a western beam on there

Jamie Brindle, who oversaw Notts TV's successful launch has moved to KMTV. So I'd expect the Kent local channel to punch above their weight too.

Not surprised really I don't think there is a commercial radio station in the country that sounds unprofessional in the way a lot of local TV is. So you'd expect a commercial radio group to get the right people in to make sure it doesn't happen to them.
