Didn't realise he was quite that old - somewhat the unsung hero of ITN.

And guess it's back to the edit suite for those making the 2016 obit compilations.

Michael was only on AJE last year discussing his role reporting during the Vietnam War.

Moreso sad that the death was unexpected. It occurred whilst on holiday cruise.

Really sad news that Michael Nicholson has passed away. He was, of course, most famous as a reporter for ITN but his work presenting the News at 545 will not be forgotten.

To that end, I thought it would be a fitting tribute to share these small gems from the archive - original master recordings of Michael's voiceovers for the programme (voiced by Simon Bates of course): https://www.dropbox.com/sh/oju5usk91n37yd9/AACscAn5Sle4ALGVijg8u3nNa?dl=0

Worthwhile revisiting Rob's link again, it's been heavily updated in the last couple of hours.

For those of you who missed it, here is Alastair Stewart's tribute from tonight's News at Ten.

Fitting Alastair fronted News at Ten tonight - clearly choked up a bit at the end there which says a lot about the class of both men.

As of the time at which I'm making this comment, BBC News Online doesn't have a reference to the death of Michael Nicholson (I know that BBC News and ITN are rivals but I thought there was mutual respect between those news organisations).

Has that been confirmed?

He could have been on board one of the more 'upmarket' ships as the guest speaker/on board lecturer. I know Peter Sissons and Martin Bell have regular engagements on this circuit.

Sir David Frost was on board the Queen Elizabeth for a similar speaking engagement, when he died.

BBC Network Radio news are reporting on the news of his death - so it's on-line that don't appear to have noticed.

RIP, Michael. A formidable reporter and newscaster, IMO.
