Just been announced on News at Ten. From ITV News website:

Quote:
David Cameron and Nigel Farage will take part in a live EU referendum event on ITV, the broadcaster has announced.

The two party leaders will each take questions from a studio audience during an hour-long programme moderated by Julie Etchingham.

"Cameron and Farage Live: The EU Referendum" will be broadcast at 9pm on Tuesday, June 7, on ITV and is the first of two live events on ITV ahead of the vote.

British voters will take part in an in/out referendum on June 23.

Mr Farage, the UKIP leader, will take questions first from the audience of up to 200 people, who will be drawn from across the UK. The prime minister will then take the floor.

ITV will broadcast a second live programme two days later, again moderated by Julie Etchingham, who moderated ITV's Leaders' Debate during the 2015 General Election campaign.

The ITV Referendum Debate will be broadcast live from 8pm to 10pm on Thursday, June 9, featuring yet-to-be announced political figures from both sides. The format will be similar to the 2015 leaders' debate.

They've secured the big names there which will probably bring in the punters. I wonder if they'll get Boris for the second one.

Or put people off. Cameron will be delighted it's Farage and not Boris in that first one.

I'm still not convinced in the effectiveness of the TV debates, especially now the novelty has well and truly worn off. Then again I guess for the TV debates to be effective the politicians need to be effective.

I say this right now, There is not a chance in hell the tory party will allow two of its members to debate each other.....

They are hardly debates, each representative takes questions from an audience, one after the other. No way Cameron will be toe to toe with anyone.

Yes, and according to the media today, David Cameron (of course) doesn't want a Tory vs Tory battle on the EU on prime time telly.

It's worth mentioning that whilst Nigel Farage is not part of the official Vote Leave campaign (and according to him they keep rejecting his requests to speak at their rallies) he does represent one of the popular unofficial campaigns which did put a bid in to become the official out campaign, known as GO (Grassroots Out) where Conservative MP Peter Bone, Labour MP Kate Hoey and George Galloway are also on their campaign team.

I would assume one of the above out campaigners from GO may well feature in the second ITV debate/Q&A (whatever you want to call it) or the BBC or Sky ones.

The second one is described as a debate, the first as a "live event". Would 'EU referendum on ITV' be a better topic title?

Alistair Stewart or Tom Bradby should host the debates.

Why? Julie has proven herself to be a superb moderator.

I think Alistair or Tom would inject some life into a debate.
